Microsoft says North Korea-linked hackers stole sensitive information

Thallium is believed to be operating from North Korea, Microsoft said in a blog post, and the hackers targeted government employees, think tanks, university staff members and individuals working on nuclear proliferation issues, among others. Most of the targets were based in the United States, as well as Japan and South Korea, the company said. U.S. Says Strikes on Militia in Iraq Sent a Warning to Iran

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. air strikes on five bases in Iraq and Syria used by an Iranian-backed militia sent a warning to Tehran that President Donald Trump’s patience has its limits.“One of the things that we want to emphasize is that this was a defensive action that was designed to protect American forces and American citizens in Iraq,” Brian Hook, the State Department’s Iran envoy, said in a telephone briefing Monday. “We’re also working on the mission set of restoring deterrence against Iranian aggression.”Sunday’s rare direct strike on an Iranian proxy came at an especially tense time and held the potential for escalation. The U.S. and Iran are locked in a standoff over the Trump administration’s crippling economic offensive against Tehran -- meant to force it to renegotiate the 2015 nuclear deal Washington has abandoned -- and the Islamic Republic’s suspected reprisals.Rocket assaults on or near Iraqi installations that host American troops and personnel have occurred since the fal

Uber, Postmates Sue California to Block Gig-Worker Law

Uber and Postmates sued the state of California, alleging that a labor rights law set to go into effect this week is unconstitutional. The lawsuit filed Monday in Los Angeles federal court is a preemptive strike against the state’s landmark measure designed to ensure gig workers receive employment protections. Uber and Postmates argue the legislative process around California’s Assembly Bill 5 unfairly targeted gig economy companies while favoring other industries and that the law will threaten workers’ flexibility. The passage of A.B. 5, which takes effect Wednesday, has set in motion a  bitter dispute  about the rights of Uber drivers, food couriers and other people who derive their income from apps made in Silicon Valley working as independent contractors. Uber and Postmates say it’s arbitrary that direct salespeople, travel agents, grant writers, construction truck drivers, commercial fishermen and others are exempted from the law. “There is no rhyme or reason to these nonsensi

Photos of Black Holes Will Blow Our Minds Again in 2020

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- The seemingly impossible, paradoxical news that astronomers had taken a picture of a supermassive black hole captured our imaginations in 2019 for good reason. What they actually showed us was a sort of shadow — a spherical blackness surrounded by a cosmic hurricane of matter and energy — but that was enough to qualify as a sign of real human progress. And so the April announcement rose above other, less hopeful science-related news in 2019 — global warming, plastic overload, disinformation, drug overdoses and unaffordable medicine. Science, Nature and Science News all flagged the photo of the supermassive black hole — weighing an estimated 6.5 billion suns — as breakthrough of the year.Getting that now-iconic image relied on technology that did not exist at the turn of the millennium. The leaders of the project said they counted on Moore’s Law to bring the electronic advances they needed. The image was constructed from radio waves picked up at eight far-flung tel

India’s Rightward Lurch Is Self-Defeating

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- For decades, Indian foreign policy has been moving slowly but methodically in a single direction: toward a greater embrace of the West. The days of non-alignment, when India believed it led the developing world in standing apart from either Cold War bloc, are over. Although successive governments in New Delhi have worked hard to avoid antagonizing Beijing, it has been taken for granted that India’s future lies in ever closer ties to other liberal democracies.Equally, support for India’s rise has been one of the few subjects of bipartisan consensus in Washington. Both Democratic and Republican administrations have pushed for closer ties, even when New Delhi has appeared too suspicious or inefficient to respond. A fast-growing liberal democracy, open and transparent, and with the potential to balance China — what could go wrong?A great deal is going wrong, as the visit of India’s foreign minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, to Washington recently revealed. Such visit

As Robots Take Over Warehousing, Workers Pushed to Adapt

Guess who’s getting used to working with robots in their everyday lives? The very same warehouse workers once predicted to be losing their jobs to mechanical replacements. But doing your job side-by-side with robots isn’t easy. According to their makers, the machines should take on the most mundane and physically strenuous tasks. In reality, they’re also creating new forms of stress and strain in the form of injuries and the unease of working in close quarters with mobile half-ton devices that direct themselves. “They weigh a lot,” Amazon worker Amanda Taillon said during the pre-Christmas rush at a company warehouse in Connecticut. Nearby, a fleet of 6-foot-tall roving robot shelves zipped around behind a chain-link fence. Taillon’s job is to enter a cage and tame Amazon’s wheeled warehouse robots for long enough to pick up a fallen toy or relieve a traffic jam. She straps on a light-up utility belt that works like a superhero’s force field, commanding the nearest robots to abrupt

Bitcoin’s Purported Creator Says Fortune May Remain Locked

(Bloomberg) -- The man who claims he invented the world’s largest cryptocurrency and was ordered by a judge to surrender about $3 billion of his Bitcoin holdings said he may not be able to do so anytime soon.In a statement to Bloomberg News, Craig Wright said that he “cannot be certain that information will in fact arrive” to help identify the coins he has to split in a legal dispute. The Australian scientist added that he hasn’t said the “private keys” to those coins would become available or be actually used next month.Earlier this year, U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart in West Palm Beach, Florida, said Wright submitted false documents and lied in the legal dispute. He ruled that the late Dave Kleiman owned half of all Bitcoins that Wright mined through 2013, and half of all intellectual property he created. At the time, half of the Bitcoins was valued at about $4 billion, but the digital token’s price has declined since. The ultimate test may be whether Wright is actually able t

The Next China? Vietnam Looks Good Only on Paper

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- A young labor force, a real estate boom, a politically stable Communist-led country that can reap riches through exports and a friendly relationship with the U.S. — many have compared Vietnam to what China was more than two decades ago. Add one more trait to this mix as we enter the 2020s: profitless prosperity. With Vietnam quickly moving up the global supply chain, the Southeast Asian nation has been hailed as the biggest winner out of the current U.S.-China trade spat. High-profile relocations underscore the point. Alphabet Inc.’s Google is shifting production of Pixel smartphones, while Samsung Electronics Co. has closed its last smartphone plant in China. Even Chinese companies, such as Goertek Inc., supplier of Apple’s popular AirPods earphones, are moving. It’s prime time for Vietnam in the tech world. The country also notched just under 7% growth in gross domestic product, among the fastest in the world. Yet such enthusiasm is not reflected in the stock ma

Vietnam to Punish Firms for Trade Fraud in China-Product Probe

(Bloomberg) -- Vietnam will punish four companies for fraudulent labels on products from China that the firms claim were made locally, as authorities expand their crackdown into Chinese manufacturers trying to bypass U.S. tariffs. The unidentified companies, which assemble bicycles, electric bikes and wooden shelves, admitted to the violations, according to a government statement. Vietnam’s customs department is also investigating possible violations by five other firms, and expanding the probe into other products such as solar energy batteries and LED lights. The agency has also ordered customs units in nine cities and provinces to look into the activities of 24 other companies. It is calling for closer examination of firms that set up operations from late 2018 and which import Chinese spare parts and accessories for export to the U.S. and European Union.Vietnam has strict rules on what constitutes being manufactured locally, while its trading partners could also take action against the

Say Goodbye to Banking as We Know It

(Bloomberg Opinion) -- So is China readying its own Bitcoin? Banish the thought. It’s far bigger than that. Yes, just like any other cryptocurrency — or for that matter, cigarettes in prisoners-of-war camps — the upcoming digital yuan will be “tokenized” money. But the similarity ends there. The crypto yuan, which may be on offer as soon as 2020, will be fully backed by the central bank of the world’s second-largest economy, drawing its value from the Chinese state’s ability to impose taxes in perpetuity. Other national authorities are bound to embrace this powerful idea.     Little is known about the digital yuan except that it’s been in the works for five years and Beijing is nearly ready to roll. The consensus is that the token will be a private blockchain, a peer-to-peer network for sharing information and validating transactions, with the People’s Bank of China in control of who gets to participate. To begin with, the currency will be supplied via the banking system and replace som

Nio Stock Finally Has Some Positive Near-Term Triggers

Nio (NYSE:NIO) has been unimpressive for the most part of the year. From March 2019 highs of $10.16, the stock slumped by 87% to $1.32 in the beginning of October. In percentage terms, there has been a big relief rally with Nio stock currently higher by about 92%. While Nio has fundamental problems, I believe that the stock can continue to rally in the foreseeable future.Source: xiaorui / Shutterstock.com From a macro perspective, the first phase of the trade deal between the United States and China has been reached. This is a key positive trigger as it can boost China's GDP growth in 2020 and beyond. Weak sales in the broad automotive industry can reverse if GDP growth gains traction. Stronger GDP growth will offset the negative impact of phasing out of subsidies for electric vehicles. From an industry perspective, China recently raised sales target for electric cars to about 25% by 2025. Currently, electric cars account for just 5% of automotive sales in China. Clearly, the govern

Chesapeake Energy Stock Looks Like a Dead Cat Bounce

Shares of Chesapeake Energy stock (NYSE:CHK) are struggling to maintain tepid gains. The CHK stock price has been climbing modestly since Dec.18 on the announcement of a life preserver deal. The company refinanced some of its debt in an effort to stop the clock on its slide towards insolvency. One of the key components of the deal was the five-year timeline to pay back the debt. As Will Healy writes, this is giving the company a precious commodity, time.Source: Casimiro PT / Shutterstock.com However, there is a harsh calculus to investing in CHK stock, even as a speculative play. There is a very reasonable chance that the company will not be able to pay back the debt. This isn't because the company is poorly managed. It's actually worse than that. The company's business model no longer works. And that's why any idea of a comeback looks like nothing more than a dead cat bounce. The Risk and Reward of Being First Through the DoorAt one time, Chesapeake was the second-larg
