6 Ways You Can Use Marketing to Build a Better Business

Starting and running a successful business takes time, commitment, and a good strategy. Not only does thoughtful planning come in handy when developing unique business ideas, but it is also an essential part of the process even after your business is well-established. Among the most critical strategies in building and maintaining any business, marketing consistently ranks near the top of the list. Here are a few reasons why marketing is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal when it comes to building a business. 1. Create Awareness One of the first challenges a new company faces is figuring out how to introduce their product to the world. Even if you offer one of the best products or services available, it does not matter if no one is aware your brand exists. This is where marketing comes into play. The job of marketing is to take a small idea and turn it into a household name. A skilled marketing strategist will know the ins and outs of advertising on multiple platforms a

Brainstorm Health: Amarin Stock, Oklahoma Opioid Testimony, Work Burnout

Good afternoon, readers. All aboard the fish train! On Wednesday, shares of biotech Amarin shot up more than 11% after the company got another piece of good news in what’s been (so far) a fortuitous 2019 – a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) priority review for its prescription strength fish oil pill Vascepa. Amarin’s stock is now up a relatively modest 6% on the year after a bit of a tug-of-war between bulls who love the company’s clinical trial results and the bears who are betting FDA reviewers will give that data a more critical eye. But it’s still up an eye-popping 440% over the past 12 months. What’s so special about this particular fish oil pill (especially given that Omega-3 fish oils have been somewhat controversial as supplements in recent years)? For one, it’s different from the over-the-counter fish oil pill varieties; for another, the clinical results Vascepa has touted include a 25% reduction in the risk of devastating cardiovascular events like heart attack and str

Qualifying for the Third Presidential Debate Just Got Harder for 2020 Democrats

With 23 Democrats vying for the 2020 presidential nomination, the Democratic National Committee is upping the threshold for candidates to appear in the third Democratic presidential debate. The DNC announced Wednesday that ABC News and Univision will host the third debate on September 12, with the possibility of adding a second night on September 13 if enough candidates meet the new threshold. To appear in the first and second debates in June and July, candidates must poll at at least 1% and have received donations from 65,000 donors with a minimum of 200 in at least 20 states. It will be even more challenging to qualify for the third debate: candidates will need to reach at least 2% in the polls and will need 130,000 individual donors with a minimum of 400 in at least 20 states. The list of approved pollsters will change for the third debate. Not only will candidates need to hit 2% from four, rather than three, polls, but also Reuters and Las Vegas Review Journal have been removed

Sears Buyer Wants to Skip $43 Million in Severance Owed to Laid Off Workers

When Eddie Lampert committed to buy out Sears from bankruptcy, he agreed to pay displaced workers up to $43 million. Now, he’s changing his mind. Lampert has asked a federal bankruptcy judge to release him from that promise, saying Sears has failed to live up to its obligation to sell him most of its assets. Lampert was in charge of Sears for years before the bankruptcy filing and some people blame him for the retailer’s financial woes. He served as chairman and former CEO of the company through its bankruptcy filing. The $43 million was earmarked for employees who lost their jobs during the hundreds of store closings from the time of the bankruptcy filing through the time Lampert’s ESL Investments (via a new subsidiary called Transform Holdco) bought the company holdings. Lampert says Sears has not fallen short on several fronts, including handing over ownership of its headquarters in Chicago and delaying payments to key vendors. Sears Holdings , meanwhile, has sued Lampert, sayin

Why Alibaba’s Hong Kong IPO May Signal a Chinese Retreat From Wall Street

This article first appeared in Data Sheet, Fortune's daily newsletter on the top tech news. To get it delivered daily to your in-box, sign up here . Clay Chandler here, filling in for Adam from rainy Hong Kong where everybody is buzzing about Alibaba. As we briefly mentioned on Tuesday, the Chinese tech behemoth is mulling a secondary listing on the Hong Kong exchange to raise $20 billion later this year. The company isn’t commenting. But in this city, where finance floats nearly everyone’s boat in one way or another, a deal that rich would be cause for jubilation--and a huge coup for Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing (HKEC), which operates this city’s bourse. In 2014, when Alibaba first sought to go public, Jack Ma and other founders snubbed Hong Kong because HKEC refused to allow dual-class shares granting different voting rights for different stocks. Alibaba listed instead on the New York Stock Exchange, where it raised a record $25 billion. (HKEC has since dropped the dua

Robert Mueller Resigns, Says Charging Trump With Crime Was ‘Not an Option’

Announcing his resignation, Special Counsel Robert Mueller said Wednesday that charging President Donald Trump with a crime was “not an option,” citing department policy that a sitting president cannot be indicted. “Under longstanding department policy, a president cannot be charged with a federal crime while he is in office. That is unconstitutional,” said Mueller. “Charging the president with a crime was therefore not an option we could consider.” Mueller also noted that “the Constitution requires a process other than the criminal justice system to formally accuse a sitting president of wrongdoing,” likely referring to Congressional impeachment proceedings. In Wednesday’s address--Mueller’s first public statement since the start of the roughly two-year investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election--the special counsel resigned from his role at the Justice Department and reiterated the findings of his office’s report . “There were multiple, systematic efforts to int

Rare Earths, Bonds, and Permit Hell: 3 Weapons China Can Use to Escalate the Trade War

The ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China has been intense. Even disputes with other countries have often been used as ways to indirectly attack China. Overall, China has found subtle ways to beat Donald Trump at his own trade war, even as it has suffered economic damage in turn. But China has yet to fully deploy their fiscal sledgehammers. Here are three things the country could do--and in some cases has already begun to do--if it chooses to inflict maximum pain on the United States. Permit Hell The most likely step would be an aggressive extension of current bureaucracies. China has frequently turned to permitting, special laws, and other official requirements to slow foreign-owned firms while given freer room to domestic competitors. There is evidence that China has already begun to increase measures to hinder U.S. companies to create corporate pressure on the Trump administration. Just over 52% of firms reported the increase of such “qualitative measures,” according to

Alex Trebek Says His Pancreatic Cancer Is ‘Near Remission’

Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek shocked the world in March when he announced he had been diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer . He shocked it again on Wednesday with a great report from his doctors. Trebek tells People his physicians say he is “ near remission ” and some of the tumors have shrunk more than 50% after treatment. “It’s kind of mind boggling,” says Trebek . Pancreatic cancer is an especially deadly form of the disease. Just 3% of patients with stage IV pancreatic cancer are alive 5 years after being diagnosed, according to The American Cancer Society. (Stage IV means that, at the time of diagnosis, a cancer has already metastasized or spread, beyond the initial cancer.) The 78-year-old host, though, says he is drawing strength from the support of friends and fans. He acknowledges he is not yet out of the woods and says he still has several more rounds of chemo to go through. The symptoms of pancreatic cancer may include pain in the abdomen or back, weight loss, jaun

Term Sheet — Wednesday May 29, Endeavor IPO, Women, and Robinhood

ENDEAVORING Happy Wednesday! Lucinda here filling in for Polina until Friday. Please send deals my way: lucinda.shen@fortune.com. We've seen Hollywood take a plunge into minority and female-dominated casts in the form of "Black Panther," "Crazy Rich Asians," and "The Favourite," in 2018. That's not been the same for Hollywood's boards and executive teams that aren't as directly consumer-facing. Late last week, Endeavor, an entertainment giant valued at $6.3 billion that represents the likes of Emma Stone, Adele, Charlize Theron, and Oprah Winfrey, filed for an initial public offering that would extend the influence of the talent broker turned global entertainment giant. But the blockbuster IPO highlights the lack of representation at the highest levels in Hollywood--even as the heart of the global movie industry continues a shakeup that stemmed from 2017 reports that Hollywood kingpin Harvey Weinstein had sexually harassed num
